On nurture.....

A wee blog post on the guiding values I have as an animal manager whilst expanding my business in Glasgow

So, when I established Untamed__Remedy it was on the basis that my guiding ethics would be based on the promotion of nurture, which to me means providing an appropriate environment and equipment used alongside animals, (in this instance dogs), allowing them to thrive.  Nurturing to me, doesn't mean disregarding an animal's genetic predisposition to express predetermined behaviours, rather provide an environment where the animal can role play these behaviours in a way that is both enjoyable for myself and the animal.

Nurturing also encompasses good husbandry practices such as either providing medication or enrichment opportunities for animal's that may be displaying stereotypic behaviours, perhaps around traveling or whilst being walked in a group setting.

So what can you expect whilst your dog is on a walk with me? I offer lots of chances for scent work, via reinforcing behaviours associated with sniffing, lowering arousal levels and scatter feeding, which trains dogs to seek out reward using their nose. I sadly don't guarantee a clean dog on return although I do provide towel drying opportunities! I definitely encourage activities that allow the dog to use their whole bodies and discover the different experiences differing environments offer, such as heathland, bogland and grassland and so forth.

So when considering what does Reina mean when she's talking about nurture, it's really a full picture and holistic approach to animal management to provide as many opportunities for your dog to succeed during our time together all whilst walked on a harness.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
